Summer Solstice

Posted on June 12th, 2024 by Farm Manager

We had such a wonderful time visiting in person with our first group of CSA members on Wednesday evening. Thank you to all who came and expressed a sincere interest in learning more about where your food comes from and for inspiring us with all of your delicious dishes! If you missed this gathering, don't worry - you can still sign up for our July or August dates!

This week in your shares, you'll see an abundance of salad greens, leafy bunched kales, and fresh herbs available. The basil and sorrel are lush and the scallions are poppin' again too, so a dish like this grilled chicken with charred-scallion chimichurri is a beautiful way to celebrate. If you're looking for another reason to fire up your grill, this grilled cabbage slaw features a scallion-ranch dressing, elevating any of the summer classics. You'll also find organic strawberries on the list this week, so perhaps trying out a new cocktail like this strawberry basil spritzer is in order!

The plants out in the fields are thriving, and the weeds are no exception. We spent most of last week tending to the carrot, beet, and asparagus beds, but in true solstice fashion, we were able to do so in the warmth of the sun. The fruiting plants, too, noticed the extra warmth and are so, so close to showing off their brilliant colors. The harvests of plump cherry tomatoes and bright sweet peppers are right around the corner.

Solstice comes from the Latin words sol (sun), and sistere (stand still), so this time of year is always a contemplative one as we pause to celebrate the sun and acknowledge all that we've done so far. Farming is a beautiful and dynamic dance of so many moments woven together and we're incredibly grateful to have you all as partners.

Cheers!
