Celebrating Our Inter-dependence

Posted on July 2nd, 2024 by Danielle *Allen

Thursday is July 4th, Independence Day, and we invite you to also celebrate our interdependence: our sense of mutuality and relationship with each another, with the beings around us who walk, slither, fly and swim; with the land itself. We celebrate the microbes in the soil, the bees pollinating the blossoms, and though our interactions with other creatures on the farm are not always as romantic (like the ticks crawling up our legs and the groundhogs who munch the leaves off kale and broccoli), we do our best to listen and to work with all the creatures that live here in a harmonious and respectful way.

Farmers and food providers have long understood the need for interdependence: sharing a tool with a neighbor, bringing food for an elderly community member, working in active relationship with the land. This knowledge is vital to both survive and to thrive, and is critical for the long road ahead to address the climate crisis and rebuild a healthy ecological and social system. It is this sense of relationship with our place and with each other, our understanding that we can only survive in partnership, that will sustain us. We celebrate you, the eater, who propels this whole thing forward and inspires us keep it all in balance to the best of our ability.
