Believe it or not, July and August are some of the most important months for fall planting. Right now I am working on pulling out played-out crops and replacing them with fall crops. Here are the most common steps we take when we flip a bed.
1. Remove the previous crop. Typically by hand. We then place the residue in the compost.
2. Rake and sometimes loosen the bed with a fork, careful to not disturb the layers of the soil.
3. Add any organic soil amendments necessary for the next crop.
4. Lightly hoe to mix in the amendments. Then rake the bed level. Add mulch or compost if necessary.
5. Mark the number of rows needed for the next crop using a rake with row markers placed over the teeth.
6. Use a push seeder or plant seeds or transplants by hand.
7. Water!
Super simple, fast, and good for the soil!
