Raising a New Flock of Chickens!

Posted on January 11th, 2021 by Noah Sanders

We are offering farmstand deliveries this week and hope to have another one later in the month. But we will keep you updated. Great salad and some baby bok choy this week! Regular weekly Farmship delivery season will start in April, Lord willing!

One of the most popular of our products over the years continues to be our free-range eggs. We let them roam and move them around our farm so they can forage and get grass and bugs in addition to their feed. We have to raise new hens every 2 years to keep production steady. Right now we are raising a flock of pullets that we received from a hatchery in the fall. They should start laying in March. It takes them around 20 weeks from hatch to the first egg laid. This year we purchased New Hampshire Reds, which is a good traditional breed chicken that is good for both eggs or meat. Right now we are raising them in an old greenhouse so they can be protected in the cold weather but still get plenty of sunlight. We hope to move them outside once the weather settles down and the grass starts growing. In the meantime we are enjoying the eggs from the flocks my cousin Luke is managing.
