We've officially reached the busiest part of our season. This time of year, we're still sowing and planting lots of crops for fall, and we're also at peak harvest. This past week the crew pulled almost all of the garlic and brought it into cure, about 2500 heads! We also had a transplant marathon and some of the crew gave a couple extra hours so we could get all of our fall crucifer and celery plants in as well as our usual lettuces, scallions and beets. Every minute counts right now, and the better job we do and the more time we give the farm now, the more bountiful our fall harvests will be.
We're also seeing some effects of the heatwave. Our last sowings of summer spinach that I though was doing well petered out, about 50% died. I learned that there's a 10 day period where a broccoli plant switched from leaf growth to flower (broccoli-ing) and if it's over 95* for 5 of those days it can affect head formation. This is our last big harvest of broccoli for about a month, and we know how much people love it, so we're putting it in boxes anyway! The heads are still delicious, they just look a little funny with some buds poking up over others, please enjoy them all the same! We also had some germination issues with our weekly salad, radish and lettuce sowings. Apart from that, everything did really great!
This week, new to boxes is fennel. We've fallen in love with this herb since beginning to farm, it's so good with anything tomato based, and great mixed into roasted veggies. We also have the last salad turnips until fall! The rest of the box is filled out with more great standbys, including more tomatoes and basil, we hoping you're enjoying some summery meals!
