In the traditional CSA structure, members buy into a farm early in the season to help cover production costs, and the farm then provides a weekly share of whatever the farm produces. In this original model, the customers took on some of the risk and understood that if the farm had a really good season, they would get a lot of produce, but if there was a some sort of catastrophe, they would get less or even no produce. Most CSAs have changed a bit since then, and ours has a bit more of a modern structure, but still we share more of the crops that are doing great with members, and members get less of crops that perform poorly simply because we don't have enough.
This season, our Basil and Kale is going bananas! We hope you'll find more ways to eat these foods with us, and enjoy them while they're here (hello pesto and kale chips). This week we've got the first ever Siberian Kale we've grown. So far I love it and only wish I had anticipated how fast it would grow and had planted it later! We've got more basil in boxes this week too, and again are offering our pesto special, swap your bunch out for a double bunch and save a dollar! (P.S. Bunches are extra bountiful right now since we're trying to keep up, now's the time to freeze some pesto for winter).
We've also hit the peak of our pickling cucumber production! We're including them in boxes this week and are also offering a couple 8lb bags of our favorite 'Salt n Pepper' pickling cukes if you want to put some up for winter. We've even got bunches of dill seed! No worries if you don't want to make pickles, these are awesome for snacking on too, just wash off the little spines and no need to peel!
This week also features our big flush of green beans which are so tender, as well as some cayenne chili peppers and even.... STRAWBERRIES! Our ever bearing strawberry plants are finally getting going, and we have just enough to include in shares this week.
We hope you're enjoying all the summer food while it lasts, time to get cooking!
