Pepper season always seems to take so long to arrive, even when growing in hoop houses in Central Oregon, but boy is it exciting when they're here! You'll be seeing many types of peppers available for boxes in the coming weeks. On the farm we grow Shishitos, Chilis, Poblanos and Sweet Italians. This week we have available Poblanos (mild and flavorful) and Shishitos (almost always mild except for a select few that turn a little spicy, likely due to cross pollination with nearby hot peppers). We've also got plentiful chilis which will be in boxes very soon, and we're just starting to harvest a few red Sweet Italians which are our favorite. Peppers love the heat so many of our plants are loaded with fruit this year, which we're very excited about.
My favorite Oregon farmer-cook, Andrea Bemis, just posted a recipe for blistered shishitos, which is hands down the best easy way to enjoy them. I encourage you to check it out here and see for yourself. Aioli is not required; they're great just with a little sea salt, but you won't be disappointed if you pursue the aioli either.
We've got plenty of other great food coming off the farm this week, including the first of our beautiful late season broccoli crowns and the last of this season's rainbow carrots. Our new hens are also joining the working girls, and we've got eggs available to add on if you are interested. Egg quantities will always be limited for us as we are primarily a vegetable farm, but we'll keep making them available as we have them from our happy, pasture raised hens.
We're also still waiting on our new strawberry planting to hit full production, but we have a few pints available from our old planting to add on as extras. Although it seems counter-intuitive, our peak strawberry season is in the fall when it begins to cool off and our new plants become established, so more will be available in shares soon.
We wish you a great week!
