Broccolini, Celery and German Butterballs

Posted on August 31st, 2024 by Ashley Thompson

We've reached the lovely time of year when temperatures allow for more fall crops, but summer crops continue.  We have a great box for you this week with more summer flavor in addition to some fun fall crops.

Now that it is cooling off, our new bed of broccolini is maturing which means broccolini for our CSA!  We also have our single celery planting of the season looking great and ready for harvest.  Celery takes all summer to grow here, and also doesn't tolerate the cold very well.  We used to grow it in a greenhouse for later fall harvests, but switched to a single harvest from the field this year in the interest of squeezing in more tomatoes into our greenhouse, and we're glad we did.  I think this is a great time of year for celery, because potato salads still sounds great, but so does soup.  And lucky for you, we've got potatoes in boxes too this week.  Here's a good recipe option if you don't already have a favorite.

These are the first of our german butterball potatoes that we'll continue to have into the fall.  They're our favorite potato, and they're at their absolute best right now when they're young and creamy, but they continue to be delicious all winter long.

We also have slicing cucumbers for you again while they're still producing generously and dill (pictured with sparkly morning dew) in the hopes that you might enjoy some tzatziki this week.  You've got the option to go very mediterranean this week, as tzatziki pairs great with eggplant, or if you'd prefer it in a wrap or bowl, you could double your sauce game with some Baba Ganoush, one of my favorite sauces (that freezes well too).

In addition, we've got scallions and lettuce mix to fill out your box.

Happy cooking,

Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
