Farm Happenings for March 27, 2021

Posted on March 19th, 2021 by Lorien Carsey

Happy Spring!

Here is a pic of me doing some Sunday morning soil testing. We are poised to prep the fields outside, but it hasn’t dried out enough to get in today. If we drive equipment like tractors on the soil when it’s wet, we’ll cause compaction and damage it’s structure.

CSA/Farmstand Offerings:

All carrots this time around are 2nds. They look funky but are just as sweet and crunchy as the first once you peel them. We had tough harvest last year and our yield was way down from previous.

This week we have lots of bagged kale as well as kale bunches. The bagged kale will be a mix of green kale and red Russian kale. The leaves are too big to be called baby kale, but too small for bunches.

This week our salad mix has no mustard greens, but will be a mix of lettuce and beet leaves. We don’t have a picture for it yet, but we will once we get it harvested and washed. In the early spring, it’s difficult to get many cuttings off of our mustard greens, because it’s in their nature to try to set seed quickly. So, we didn’t hit the timing right this week, and have none to harvest for our mix.

We have plantings of arugula and bok choy on the way, but they’re not yet of size.

Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery has a Cracked Pepper Chèvre flavor to add as well as mixed cow/goat milk yogurt. This week the bloomy rind cheese from them is Snow Fog. The milk from their does is extra rich to benefit all the newborns.

We are in full swing at the farm, racing to get outside beds prepped in time for our 4/1 and 4/15 plantings of salad, brassicas, bunching greens, onions, and potatoes. We are also eager to get our spring cover crops seeded. There is so much to do right now as soon as we can dry out.

As usual, the website will close for customizing and ordering on Wednesday afternoon. If you have any trouble ordering, shoot us an email at bluemoonfarmurbana@gmail.com

Thanks for eating local!
