Happy Valentine's Day!

Posted on February 12th, 2024 by Conrad Cable

Valentine's Day is such a special reminder of the reasons we started farming. Growing food for my wife and I, and for my family is the heart and soul of why I became a farmer. Eating and sharing the incredible food we grow with the people I love the most gives my life so much meaning. I'm also eternally grateful and honored to share a portion of our harvest with you and those folks in your life whom you love most. Our farm share season is rising out of the deep Winter. There is very little fresh, locally grown produce available right now in North Louisiana. I think that February is the perfect time of year to show our love and gratitude for every leaf and root harvested. These crops we are eating were sown during a drought, survived an early frost, and weathered an historic winter weather event--and today each one is bursting with unmatched flavor and vitality. It is during these times of the year when we can learn the most about locally grown food's resilience and it's deliciousness through each growing season.

What's Fresh This Week?

Farewell, Arugula:

Our winter plantings of arugula were really affected by the cold snap a month ago. The plants weren't damaged, but the cold sent them into an early bolting process. Arugula is a cut and grow again crop, typically harvested three times per row, but we only harvested this planting once, then it bolted to seed. We have more arugula that will be ready to harvest in about three weeks. After this week, we will have enough arugula to use for salad mixes, but not enough to bag individually.

From Moonlight Harvest Farm:

Farmer Lacey is so grateful for everyone who has ordered fresh mushrooms! We have sold out of mushrooms every week, but this week we should have enough for everyone. From perfect omelets to pastas, I find it's so easy to incorporate fresh mushrooms into so many home cooked meals! I am so thankful that myself and all of of our farm share members have access to this amazing crop!

Spring Season Update

Our first successions of potatoes and green beans have been planted! With the weather turning nasty on Saturday, I was working on Friday evening with a headlamp to finish planting the potatoes. The green beans are growing inside of one of our caterpillar tunnels, so it was honestly a joy to plant those out of the rain on Saturday! We are growing a new variety for our farm called "Dragon's Tongue" and I think it's one of the most beautiful beans we have ever grown.

This week, we repotted tomato transplants for the first time and started a lot of pepper and eggplant seeds. The weather is looking really opportunistic, so we will be transplanting all kinds of cabbages, cauliflowers, and so much more for our Spring season. It's really starting to feel like the seasons are changing fast around the farm. We are working really hard the next few weeks so that we can finish this farm share season on a high note, and get all our ducks in a row for the Spring season. I hope that you will join us again for another amazing farm share season filled with so abundance.

Our 2024 Spring Farm Share Season will open in the next few weeks! Today I am finalizing the last few details, and then will turn the season set up over to Harvie. April 5 & 6 will be the kick-off dates for next season! Kaden and I are really excited, and we are working hard every day to ensure this will be our best Spring/Summer farm share season ever!

We hope you cook some delicious, locally-grown food this week!

Your farmers,

Conrad & Kaden Cable
