Farm Happenings for June 28, 2024

Posted on June 24th, 2024 by Alex Smith

Hello all,

We are grateful for some more mild weather here on the farm. It was tough to keep up with the irrigation needs last week. Our irrigation pond is supplemented with a solar powered well pump but it was not nearly keeping pace with the rate at which we were pumping water out of the pond to the fields, so our pond was lower than I have ever seen it.

Last week had its exciting moments though. We got a visit from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro! He came to address the exciting anaerobic digester Farmer Matt is building on the farm. For those that don't know, sometime this summer, our new biogas system will begin converting our food waste and our neighbors dairy cow manure into electricity. That electricity will meet our farms needs, our neighbors farm, and as many as 30 area houses... all from waste!

Finally, our "spring" brassica crop is finally producing. Brassicas are things like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, and kales. We work hard for spring brassicas through insect pressure and heat pressure. Lot's of farmers only grow brassicas in the fall for that reason. But, in my house at least, we need more broccoli than that!

Have a great week!

Alex
