Farm Happenings for September 17, 2024

Posted on September 13th, 2024 by Alex Smith

Happy Friday CSA customers!

It's been another productive week here at the farm. We are still harvesting many of the summer favorites, but fall is on the horizon. As hard as it is to believe, we put the first few fields to "bed" for the offseason this week. That means terminating the cash crops or summer covers and planting our winter cover crop. For most fields that is a combination of winter rye, crimson clover, and hairy vetch. The rye is a very hardy grass that will grow whenever the sun shines over the winter. The latter two are legumes that will establish in the fall but mostly remain dormant through the winter. In the spring, the clover and vetch with begin to grow among the rye stalks and "fix" nitrogen into the soil from the air. In May, the clover and vetch will produce millions of bright purple and crimson flowers for forage for our pollinators. All of that biomass will set us up for a productive 2025.

But, meanwhile, back here in 2024 we still have tons of tomatoes. So many in fact, we are offering 5lb boxes for bulk purchase. These items are an "extra" on the harvest list so they will cost above and beyond the normal CSA share. Please note, that the "paste" tomatoes are not "number 1s". Most of them will have some surface imperfections, weird shapes, and splits; but they will all still be great for sauce making and canning. Please also note, that they will be ripe and ready to go; be prepared to use them within a day or two.

Have a great weekend!

Please note that not all produce in your share has been washed, including leafy greens. We recommend you wash all produce prior to eating.
