Farm Happenings for October 11, 2024

Posted on October 7th, 2024 by Alex Smith

Good morning all,

This past weekend the farm played host to "Life Waste:  A Biogas Musical." Our farmer Matt starred in the show featuring catchy tunes about methane capture, sustainability, and an homage to Farm Legend "Biogas Bob." A number of student farmers and other Dickinson College community members rounded out the sensational cast. For the weekend, our upper barn was transformed into a theater for the production.

The other hot topic around the farm is the sunshine. It was a magical moment last Thursday when the sun broke through for the first time in 11 days. Unfortunately, the rain took it's toll on our beloved tomatoes but many other crops are as happy as can be.

Finally, today's featured picture is known as "Square 2". Our entire melon crop came from this field this year - over 10 thousand pound of certified organic watermelon. It also grew our cantaloupe and handsome crop of sweet corn that was largely decimated by deer. Now, it has a mix of ryegrass, crimson clover, and hairy vetch growing to protect/build the soil through winter and next spring. Thanks Square 2!

Have a great week,

Alex
