Hello CSA Members,
Dry Beans and Winter Squash are in the ground! This is one of the major turning points in the season for us. As soon as the ground dries out enough in the Spring to work the soil we begin a race to get crops in the ground. Many crops we are sowing and transplanting every week to every couple weeks almost year round, but for some crops we only get one shot at them a year: Winter Squash, Dry Beans, Tomatoes, Peppers, Melons... A bit of a trip to think about. If we continue to farm for 35 years, we'll only ever have had 35 chancels to grow tomatoes. That's a bit of pressure as there's no repeat chance if you don't do it right, nature makes us wait a whole other year to try again. So we've arrived for 2020. Tomatoes, peppers, melons all went in awhile back and the last of these crops are the beans. Now we shift gears to weeding, scouting for disease and pests and trying to keep those plants happy and healthy :) and in about 4 weeks we'll be shifting to planning our Fall/Winter crops. I know.. I know... feels like this season is just starting. So is the work of a farmer- one step way in the future, full steam ahead in the present, trying to hold on to the lessons of the past before we really know what they are.
PS your potatoes are looking good! Plants are large and flowering and just starting to set baby potatoes. Mmmm... can't wait for New Potatoes.. maybe a couple more weeks!
FLOWER SHARE HOLDERS: Due to some set up errors it looks like most of you who signed up for flower shares again don't have any scheduled. We have plenty of flowers available and will make bouquets available for the whole season rate of $15 instead of $18 this week for those of you who want to add them as extras. *if flowers aren't listed on your account this week, you aren't being billed for them. Super sorry for this...
