This Week's Featured Apples:

Golden Delicious- "is neither golden or delicious after 6 months in storage" says one of our Mentors, Orin Martin, of UCSC's Farm.  BUT... fresh off the tree, it doesn't even look like the same apple. Try an old standby that hasn't been stored for months and see what you think.

Hudson's Gold Gem- This is one of my absolute favorite apples! First off, let's clear up the elephant in the room.  It is RUSSETED (the skin is rough) and it's supposed to be that way... it's a trait that many apples had, but has been bred out of our popular varieties because Americans have an affinity for shiny things ;)  It's sweet, juicy, with a flavor that might remind you a bit of a pear.  It came from a seedling in an Oregon orchard in the 1930's, probably from a Golden Delicious.

Sorry Everyone- I'm having some major formatting issues this morning...  Hopefully you are able to view and make sense of the above.  We've got heaps of apples in the cooler and heaps more yet to harvest.  Such a beautiful crop this season.  What else is happening?  We just pulled in most of the Winter Squash crop.  You'll see Delicata squash available this week.  A couple note about delicata- the skin is thin, no need to peel.. just eat it.  They're delicious right now, but they'll get sweeter over the coming weeks.  Part of what's great about Winter Squash- you can use them as season decor for a good couple months and eat them later.  Store them in a warm dry place for the greatest longevity.
