It's that time of year... Our baby chicks (next year's layer hens) just arrived. Hard to beat the cuteness of day old chicks. We're pulling up the mulch and irrigation on the strawberry patch to ready it to be tilled in and the greenhouse is being prepped to plant out our Ranunculus and Anemones. Although we'll get a few blooms in January, they really start blooming in earnest in February. What else is going on at the farm? We're racing to get all the dry beans, onions, and the last of the Winter Squash under cover just in case of Fall rains and frost. A frost is not out of the ordinary for us starting mid-October and when we get that first frost it will usually kill the summer squash and the basil. Everyone is pretty worn out and we're all excited to shift our start time to 8am this week (even though daylight savings will make it un necessary in a couple weeks). IN YOUR BOXES THIS WEEK: Bunching greens are back! We skipped a few plantings to lighten the load while all the Summer crops were on, but our first fall/overwintered round is ready to pick. We've also added Sunshine Kabocha winter squash to the mix (super sweet, creamy flesh with very thin orange skin that can be eaten).
Idared: New! Cross between a Jonathan and Wagener Apple. Originally from Moscow, ID. This beautiful dark red skinned apple holds up beautifully to cooking and keeps well. Mild flavor, can make a beautiful pink applesauce if cooked with skins. Sweetly tart.
Enterprise:New! Dark red skin and white flesh. Firm, crisp texture. Sweet enough to eat out of hand, with enough tartness to make a great pie, non-browning. Great keeper, even just in your crisper. Great for cooking as well as a eating out of hand. It's parentage is complex- a mix of Macintosh, Rome Beauty, and Golden Delicious.
