Howdy Everyone,

REMINDER- we can't hold your shares beyond the pick up times!  We all slip and forget or have extenuating circumstances that lead to boxes not being picked up on time, but it really can lead to lots of issues for our generous site host when boxes are abandoned.  Imagine the fun raccoons can have with dozens of eggs ;)  or the maggots and flies that show up after your box turns into slimy soup in the summer heat of a couple days. For this reason we don't ask your site hosts to leave out product beyond 8pm the night of pick up. And no, we don't provide them with extra fridges to store everything till you can pick it up later. Most hosts donate, re-distribute, or compost shares left beyond the pick up time.

FARM NEWS: Reviving a favorite photo of my daughter Ellie.. That's how we roll here at Fifth Crow.  No need for putting it in a salad, we just eat them heads of lettuce like apples ;)! We all had colds this past week and are feeling a bit low, so my newsletter will be brief.  We're putting our first Spring strawberries in the boxes.  Woohooo! But to spread the love around we are making the portions smaller (1pint baskets instead of 1lb clamshells).  Don't worry, soon there will be more than you can handle or want.  We also just picked the first itty bitty summer squash last weekend, so hopefully by next week we'll have enough to offer some to subscribers.

Re-usable Produce Bags!! Please return them :)

Coming to your boxes soon...  Last year we surveyed all of you to see where we could improve and how to sync what we're offering with what you all actually want.  Many of you really would love to see less plastic in your shares.  While we haven't figured out how to avoid having to bag things (in order to get portions equal, maintain quality, and make packing easier), we have found some affordable re-usable mesh produce bags that will hopefully arrive in the coming week.  Yay, re-usable washable packaging instead of one time use plastics!! BUT... We need your help to make this work.  While a plastic bag costs about .01 cents, the new bags cost over .60 cents.  I know it doesn't seem like much but that's increasing our packaging costs by 60 times.  I.e. in order for them to pay off we need to use them at least 60 times.  In a given season if everyone returns them the week after use they will get 14 uses MAX.  Okay okay.. you say.  Get to the point.  The point is we need you to return them promptly so we can re-use them.  We are having to raise prices on many items this year, which will help to cover that cost.  But this year will be an experiment.  We'll see how this goes and whether we can continue to expand re-usables with such a large member base. We've ordered the equivalent of 9 bags for each member.  Please do your best to get them back to us promptly so we can keep re-using them.

Bon Appetit!
