Farm News for June 2, 2022

Tip of the Week:

Before you leave your pick up site, check the contents of your box to see if anything is missing.  If the contents of your order don't fit in one box, there may be a second box!  Large shares are almost always packed in 2 boxes.  Regular shares with a few extras sometimes won't fit into one box either.  If we packed your order in two boxes it'll say "1 of 2" or "1 of 3" at the top (if you have extras that don't get packed into boxes like flowers). We do our best, but we do sometimes just miss something.  If something is just missing please to let us know by e-mailing csa@fifthcrowfarm.com and we'll give you credit for the item.  If you think of it, take a photo of the label on the front of the box- that can help us figure out how and who on staff made the error.  We color code new people who are learning the rope ;)

Meet The Crew:

Where are your food $$'s going?  Our biggest expense by far is labor.  Over the course of the season we'd like to introduce you to the people that bring you all this nutritious food and beautiful flowers.  Fifth Crow is owned and operated by 3 partners- myself, my husband Mike, our friend John.  His wife Maggi helps run the flower operation.  We each have 2 kids.  The farm currently supports 30 other employees.  Of those 5 are couples with kids and many of our other crew also have families they support.  Many originally came from Oaxaca.  But Guanajuato, Michoacan, El Salvador, Vermont, and New England are also represented.

Hello, my name is Maggi. John Vars (co-owner of FCF) and I have been together for almost as long as this farm has been in production, and I have worked here off and on for many of those seasons. I am currently part of the flower crew here, responsible for the sowing schedule, harvest, and design of the bouquets. My journey to gardening and farming began in 2007 when I apprenticed at a small but mighty farm called Camp Joy in Boulder Creek. It was there that my love of flowers began, and since then I have worked at several both big and small production farms here on the Central Coast, including two farms where I also cared for goats. When we are not farming, John and I are with our two children Naima and Bodhi, riding bikes or making art on our deck.
