We had our first frost finally. Last year it was October 3rd, the earliest we've experience since we started farming in Pescadero in Fall 2008. This year is was October 25th, I think the latest we've had since we've farmed here. The basil and green beans are damaged enough that we are pulling the plug. Crossing my fingers that the summer squash, though growing very slowly, will be ok for one more harvest. I've added Buttercup squash this week- my personal favorite as it tends to be just about the sweetest squash we grow and pretty much the perfect texture. just halve and roast it till soft. top with a little butter and that's all you need. I'm also known to sneak spoonfuls of it when no one is looking and eat it straight with vanilla ice cream. It tastes so good, I don't even bother to make it into a pie ;)
We've pulled the plug on the dahlias as well. We will pick a few stragglers tomorrow for weekend markets, but no more wholesale or CSA fresh floral. We're deep in digging up tubers to store for the Winter now. We have added some beautiful dried bouquets (more to come I was just struggling with some tech challenges to creating new items on the site). I've also added a few wreaths. We'll be making more this week. Each one takes 1-2hours to make, so we can't manage heaps of them, but they are truly works of art and photos never seem to do them justice. The ones available were all made by Leticia Ortiz.
