In my former life, I grew and propagated perennials as a recreation and stress reliever for an audacious lifestyle. In the process, I learned some of the principles of growing in protective culture, and low tunnels, about four feet high.
After we started Hillcrest Farms in 2010, I attended an organic conference about seven years ago. The keynote speaker described the 15 year weather forecast with very intense storms with lots of rain and extended droughts. The message was prepare your soils and growing practices to endure the coming extremes. That led to extensive soil amending and my first high tunnel, and here we are today, 6 hoop houses later, and they really do work!
I have Asparagus on the menu, and I think the next 5 nights of frost will render the crop unmarketable for mid week. I'll try to carry any requests forward in that event. Maybe Saturday?
This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the first Allen Street Outdoor Market on the corner of SHEPARD STREET AT MICHIGAN AVENUE, 2:30 - 7:00 after that. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery 11:00 - 12:00 noon. I will NOT be at JC Park until May 22, regardless of what Harvie says! May 22 is the first Grand Ledge Farmers Market, 9:00 - 1:00 at JC Park.
Thank you,
