Farm Happenings for November 6, 2021

Posted on November 2nd, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good Morning!

Next Saturday, November 6, we will fall below 10 hours of daylight, and plant growth either slows down significantly, or ceases altogether. With this in mind we will transplant our last flats of leafy greens for March harvest in the next 5 days! Patience to you salad mix consumers, we should be able to accommodate you yet this coming month of November!

Plant life requires 3 things in order to germinate and grow: soil temperature warm enough to germinate, water and light for photosynthesis. Before it gets too cold, I will thoroughly water the soil in our two new midi hoop houses, and cover the ground with a heavy black tarp. The tarps will warm the  soil, and the weed seeds will germinate. Behold, there is no light as the seedling emerge, and the weeds perish with no help from me or chemicals. The beds will be ready for no till planting late February for our Spring harvests!

This week I am at the Eaton Rapids Family Fare parking lot on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. I'll be located on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Fairview. Next week we'll move into the Allen Street building on the corner of Kalamazoo and Shepard Streets. Thursday is farm pick up, and Saturday we drop off Grand Ledge produce in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00-12:00 noon.

Please se the attached menu, and let me know if I can help. I hope to see you soon!
