Good morning!
Horticulture Spring was 7 weeks ago, and the Calendar Spring was 1 week ago. With below freezing overnight temps forecast for the next ten days-plus, is anyone out there working the soil?! This cold air situation is really normal for this time of year, so we are prepared. The main obstacle I will encounter during the first half of April is the very short harvest window. Bear with us, and we'll be rolling in the good stuff very soon!
I will be transplanting into the new medium sized hoops, dedicated crops for our wholesale customers like food hubs and institutions like restaurants and schools. The nature of these enterprises require a very high quality product, and I overplant the anticipated orders by 80% as a safety net. This usually results in an overage of quality produce that the customer at large outside of our Harvie Membership never sees. I am working with my Harvie Account Manager to set up a farmstand that can channel these extras to you by the end of April. The amounts are always limited; otherwise I would offer them on the weekly menus!
This week I am at the Family Fare Parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market indoors, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday morning I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
