Farm Happenings for March 8, 2023

Posted on March 5th, 2023 by Mark Kastner
I am just running a bit behind today; the sunny day warmed the nursery to unusual warmth and opportunity. I think we are ready to move forward with the planting schedule. My regular seed suppliers were unable to deliver certain certified organic Onion seeds, and I managed two varieties of red onions from an Oregon company, Yesterday they began to germinate and here we go!

Certified Seeds are important to me because we start nearly all of our produce from seeds, so that  I can control the chemical free growing process from beginning to harvest. Most hiccups we can overcome, and the long term crops like Tomatoes, Peppers, Onions, and Winter Squash can be problematic, so it's nice to be in control! Moving on, the early summer favorites such as Baby Lettuce Salad Mix, Cherry Tomatoes, and other greens are growing faster, and we are pretty much on schedule.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and scheduled home deliveries, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
