Farm Happenings for October 4, 2023

Posted on October 1st, 2023 by Mark Kastner
Mid September to mid October is the busiest time of our Agriculture/ Horticulture year! We are still planting, prepping beds, and transplanting for Winter Production. The last crop that I plant is Garlic, and my organic garlic seed order hasn't arrived yet. The typical late Cabbage and Brussels Sprouts look great, and the outdoor Autumn Kales are  just waiting for the first kiss of frost. Meanwhile, the last succession of Big Beef Tomatoes are beginning to ripen!

Digging up the Sweet Potato harvest is normally a 2-3 person venture. I notice that the temperatures coming in about a week are the normal October, quite chilly, and Sweet Potatoes are very cold sensitive. I test dug one hill yesterday, while scouting for this week's menu, and they  are ready and beautiful! Oh my, now what am I going to do!

This week I am at the Family Fare  parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the Alllen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and scheduled home deliveries. Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery on Bridge Street in GRand Ledge for all deliveries, 11:00-12:00 noon, and pre-arranged home deliveries in GL after that. I hope to see you soon!
