Hello!
In about two weeks our Latitude Zone will finally meet the threshold of 10 hours of daylight needed by most plant life to activate photosynthesis and begin to size. (Today we are at 9 hours and 35 minutes). Meanwhile, some of the Leafy Greens like lettuces, kales and asian greens, will come out of the polar vortex into the more moderate temperatures thinking Spring (!) and will move to seed production and channel their energy to that end. The cost is crop quality and flavor! With that in mind, we will begin planting replacement Kale and Bok Choi this coming week.
Going forward, I will post Spring Mix (5 baby lettuces and 5 asian greens) to the menu this week. The lettuce is not quite ready, but we want to harvest the Asian Greens while still at their prime. Quantities are limited, but I tested everything yesterday, and approved this early treat! Reminder: please return the waxed boxes if you get a chance. We are allowed to reuse them cleaned and in good condition. It's good for the environment, and helps keep our costs in check...concurrently, I am also looking at biodegradable options, so stay tuned!
This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00 Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and scheduled home deliveries, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. After that we'll service the balance of home deliveries. I hope to see you soon, and Thank You!
