The harvest of hardy kiwi (kiwiberries) is just beginning. This year's is a light crop, but we will have enough to go around. For those of you unfamiliar with the fruit, pictured above, they are a smaller, smooth skinned variety of kiwi. They are harvested firm otherwise they rot), then stored refrigerated, than brought out a few days before consumption to finish ripening. This is important to know. The berries must be soft before you eat them! Otherwise they do not taste good at all. To accomplish this, simply leave them at room temperature and check them daily. We have only a few available this week for those who can't wait, more coming in the next few weeks. We should have them available all through the fall.
The apples and Asian pears did terribly this year. Many of the trees never flowered: some flowered but didn't set fruit, and those trees that did fruit suffered greatly from pests and disease. Thus, we have no apples and only a few Asian pears. We have some available this week, with a few trees yet to harvest. The fruit are quite small but sweet and flavorful.
On the bright side, broccoli, broccolini both look good, as do fall carrots and sweet potatoes. Peppers are starting to turn red (or yellow) and we have a good supply of lettuce this week.
