Hello! Hard to believe the year is already half over. Yet the season of produce is just getting started! Here is a picture of our first cucumber planting:
No matter what I do, it seems to always show up sideways. Try turning your head to the left. No, the other way. To the faint of heart, being confronted by a solid mass of vines like this at harvest time can be a bit daunting. But then....
The hidden treasure is revealed! These are about 1 day away from harvest. Or two, if I sleep late tomorrow and don't get to it. The other new item this week, in addition to the cukes, is cabbage. I don't have a picture of them, but you can imagine what it is like--round green spheres. It has been a challenging spring in many ways but the cabbage has thrived.
Most other crops seem to be doing fine as well. Here is a picture of our potato field:
and a closeup of a a potato plant, with a ladybug on aphid patrol:
Potatoes have never been my best crop but this year they look very promising indeed, with good sized, healthy plants, very few weeds, and minimal insect pressure.
Quick reminder to please return the boxes from previous weeks' deliveries. Doing so keeps packaging costs low and the shares affordable. Not to mention that many are family heirlooms that have been with us since the Eisenhower administration. Just kidding. It was the Nixon Administration.
Finally, here's a picture of a new friend I found crawling through the onion patch:
Speaking of onions, we're offering both "pearl drop" and "mini purplette" onions this week. The white ones are milder and better for salads, the purples if you want to cook them lightly. Both are mini onions, growing only to golf ball size, with edible greens. I highly reccomend both of them.
As always, your feedback is appreciated-- drop us a line!
