It's Week 20 of our CSA season! Only 4 more weeks to go after this. It seems unreal that it's already the middle of October. The weather has been perfect for vibrant leaf color this year. Maple trees not only give us delicious syrup, but they also give us the best fall colors.
The featured photo this week might not be very pretty to look at, but it's a beautiful picture if you're an organic farmer. The compost on top of the ground is full of microorganisms that will create living soil to grow healthier plants. Glacial Till Farm uses both green and brown compost to enrich their soil.
Here's how Derek explains his process: After spring salad greens I started prepping the 2021 garlic beds.
1. Power harrow crop residue
2. Seed with peas and oats cover crop
3. Flail mow just before oats shoot head
4. Spread compost
5. Tarp.
Garlic will be going into the ground in a few weeks which marks the end of our planting season.
