How about some giant kohlrabi?? I put this beauty from Detweiler Farm next to my Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin for size comparison. This baby measures about 9 inches in diameter, but it's still tender inside. Many of you love kohlrabi, but some of you may be wondering what in the world you will do with that giant. Well...we have a whole board on Pinterest devoted to kohlrabi recipes. My favorite is to make a slaw out of it, but that's a lot of slaw to eat since half of my family doesn't care for it. So I will add it to our roasted veggies, and I'll also slice some to serve with ranch dressing for dipping.
Glacial Till Farm is making great progress on their high tunnel. This will allow them to harvest kale and spinach later in the season, plus have spring greens much earlier. Sadly, the recent freeze wiped out their salad mixes for the rest of the season.
In other news, your farmers are beginning to put their fields to bed for the winter. Many are sowing cover crop seeds that will keep the soil covered through the winter. In the spring that cover crop will be cut down or tilled in for green manure to nourish the soil before planting. Some farmers are planting garlic this month for harvest next year. Though it is harvested in the summer, many farmers save most of their harvest until after they have planted next year's crop. This week we have garlic from Detweiler Farm in CSA boxes.
Winter CSA: Many of you have been wondering about Winter CSA. We are almost ready to launch the new season, so watch your email. Due to fewer crops available, we need to limit our delivery area to our larger pickup locations: Butler, Franklin, Grove City, Hermitage, Meadville, and Slippery Rock. Delivery will be twice/month for four months. We won't be offering home delivery or delivery to Pittsburgh this winter. For those of you who live on our delivery route, we will continue to have fully customized shares in the winter, although with fewer veggie choices. But other farm products will be available to swap into your shares if you don't prefer certain veggies.
Turkeys: We continue to take deposits for pastured turkeys to be delivered November 18-19. AB fresh turkeys will be 10-15 lb., and CM frozen turkeys will be 20+ lb. We will continue to take orders for them until Nov. 9 or until they are sold out, whichever comes first.
Baked Goods: Dinner Bell Farm treats us to seasonal flavors with Applesauce Cookies, Pumpkin Scones, and Sandwich Buns this week. You can swap them into your share or order them as extras.
Only four more weeks left in this season (including this week)! As soon as Winter CSA has started, we will begin planning for next year. But most of your farmers are looking forward to the slower days of winter. In the meantime, we continue to work the fields and care for our animals to bring you the best food that we can.
On behalf of your NWPA Growers farmers,
