Winter CSA Week 2

Posted on December 10th, 2020 by Amy Philson

It's time for Week 2 of Winter CSA!  If you signed up late and are just starting CSA this week, you will want to read last week's blog post with Winter CSA info.  Or if you didn't read it then since it was Thankgsgiving weekend, you might want to do so now.

It's the dark days of December, when we have the least daylight of the year and freezing temps.  So how do we bring you fresh greens? Winter greens harvest begins months before with planting cold-hardy plants.  When the days grow short and we have more clouds than sun, the plants barely grow at all, and the plants just sit there waiting for their friend to come back and shine on them.  Greenhouses alone give enough protection for some plants like kale and spinach, but more tender plants like lettuce are grown in a heated greenhouse that is fired by wood harvested from the farm.  Let's hope that we have a mild winter with lots of sun to keep up our supply of fresh greens!

Share customization ends at noon on Sunday.  Then I will move any greens that were not ordered in CSA over to the Webstore until it closes Monday morning.

If you're not sure how swaps and extras work, Harvie has a great help document with explanation and photos.

Are you looking for some holiday gifts?  Head on over to our Webstore to find some locally-made products.  Philsons' Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup is back in stock, plus Maple Mustard, Maple Wing Sauce, Vanilla Bean Maple Syrup, and Cinnamon Roll Maple Syrup (as well as regular old maple in both Amber and Dark).  The Way Nature Intended offers lots of different health and beauty products all made with natural ingredients and essential oils.  Sugar Scrubs, Bath Teas, Lotions, and more.  Plus Heather is offering a FREE lip care gift set ($9.00 value) if you buy at least $30.00 of her products from the Webstore.  Webstore orders are delivered with CSA for no extra delivery fee for CSA members.

Baked goods this week include Chocolate Toffee Bark (packaged in pretty bags for gift giving), Ballpark Pretzels, and Chewy Molasses Cookies from Dinner Bell Farm.  Mushrooms this week include Lions Mane and Shiitake.  All of these are available as swaps and extras in CSA, and they are also sold in the Webstore.

Your farmers wish you all a joyous holiday season.  Even in these challenging times, we can all be a light for good that shines in the darkness of fear and negativity.  May your days be filled with good food, family, and friends as much as you are able.
