Winter CSA Week 3

Posted on December 31st, 2020 by Amy Philson

While most of us are happy to leave 2020 behind and move on to a better year, our small farms had a great growing year overall.  But we will continue to improve to bring you even better farm products.  We are busy planning our crops for next season and ordering seeds.  Even though most of our garden beds and fields are resting under snow and ice right now, our farms are always busy.

Derek at Glacial Till Farm just spread compost on his beds, while kale and spinach continue to grow in the greenhouse.

At Harmony Grove Farm, they are praying for sun most days.  Wood heat keeps their greenhouse warm enough to grow lettuce all winter, but the greens don't grow without sunshine.  It's amazing how they shoot up after a nice sunny day or two.

Koji is a new green from Harmony Grove Farm this week. It is a variety of tatsoi, with dark green hearty leaves that resemble spinach.  It can be eaten raw in salads or lightly cooked as you would other greens.  Give it a try!

Besides the storage crops from Detweiler Farm and fresh greens from Harmony Grove and Glacial Till, we have sourced sweet potatoes, savoy cabbage, and beets from Clarion River Organics for this week.  And we have some of their salsa and hot pepper rings in the Webstore!  If you're not familiar with savoy cabbage, it is round like a normal head of cabbage, but the leaves are more delicate and wavy like napa cabbage.

Spinach from Glacial Till Farm is in short supply, so if you want any you will have to swap them into your share.  This way everyone has a chance to get spinach when you customize your share.  If there is any left after the customization period, I will add it to the Webstore on Sunday afternoon.

Baked goods this week from Dinner Bell Farm include Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies and the ever-popular English Muffin Bread.

Other Webstore news includes a new shipment of fish from Wild for Salmon.

Remember that share customization ends at noon on Sunday, and veggies that aren't claimed in CSA will be added to the Webstore on Sunday afternoon.

Happy New Year to all of you.  Our hope for this year is that our communities will enjoy good food and good health.
