Can you believe that Spring CSA is at an end? The year is speeding by...again. In the midst of all the busy-ness of spring, I have to remind myself to stop and enjoy the season...watching the bees buzz around flowers, looking for familiar perennials popping up, and listening to the birds. My daughter and I were taking a walk this week, and she was thrilled to report to the rest of the family that we saw a bunch of deer munching on May apples, Baltimore orioles flirting with each other, plus we found a robin egg that had fallen out of the next that she brought home.
Memorial Day is almost upon us, and we have some specials for your cook-out. Hazy Hollow Farm is having a SALE on ground pork and pork chops, 50 cents off per package this week. And Moose Family Farm is offering ground beef patties, all ready to throw on the grill. Here's a recipe for Asian Pork Burgers with Ginger Honey Glaze. Don't forget to order some napa cabbage to make slaw to serve with your burgers.
Summer CSA begins June 9, and we go back to our summer delivery schedule. We add more pickup locations, resume home delivery, and move our Pittsburgh area locations back to Thursday. If you can't remember whether you signed up for summer, you can check your orders here. To see all of your upcoming deliveries, amount owed, and reschedule any deliveries, you want to go to this page. And here's the page where you can place an order for Summer CSA.
Webstore is still available for extras that you don't see here on Harvie yet. They are finalizing inventory management software before we move everything over here. However, Amazon changed their email delivery system that our other website uses, and they won't allow our emails to go through that site. So if you're used to receiving a separate email about Webstore, here is the link for ordering over there. I will move remaining inventory from Harvie to Webstore after the customization period ends on Sunday afternoon.
Farm News
Glacial Till Farm: I am inspired by our community. We posted record breaking farm market sales last week! It feels so great to be growing this nutritious food for our local community. I this beautiful landscape of western Pennsylvania. My body is strong, and my mind is steady.
Did you know I seed most of my vegetables with an early 1900’s push seeder? The planet JR 300a is an amazing, perfectly balanced seeder. The gentleman I purchased this seeder from told me it “didn’t work” and I “should hang it on a wall.” I seeded with it that day, and have grown 10’s of thousands of dollars in salad mix since.
Spur Hollow Farm: Harvested some of our leaf lettuce mix this morning! This mix is picked with a little bit bigger leaves for more crunch in the salad! Who doesn’t love fresh lettuce on a warm spring day? We are continually trialing new varieties in efforts to create a lettuce mix that is full of flavor, crisp texture, and stores well.
Grateful Life Farm: The weather has been glorious this week and the birds seem to be enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and pasture plants so much. I noticed them taking special interest in the wild strawberries. Maybe they also feel more at home with the company of so many wild birds. When we arrive to feed the chickens each morning, it is amazing how many different types of wild birds we can hear, filling the air with their songs. I'm always surprised how loud it is when I stop to listen. We've also been taking advantage of the good weather this week to get more garden beds turned over and more transplants planted. I'm off to plant some more kale and lettuce right now!
