Last week we were basking in a brief stretch of warmer days, monitoring forecasts and transplanting accordingly, and only a few days later we were hit with high winds and a record-breaking frost. Unfortunately, despite taking extra precautions, we lost our entire crop of sweet peppers and about half of our cucumber crop to the extremely low temperatures. Our asparagus crop was also nipped by the frost, though it will continue to grow, supplies may be limited for a little while.
After months of closely tending these crops, it was a heartbreaking scene to witness. We wanted to share this with you all because, while life on a farm is so often full of joy and beauty, there is also sometimes disappointment and grief. These moments are hard and they're humbling
Fortunately we have extra sweet pepper plants in our heated greenhouse and, paired with the incredible amount of support we've been shown from other farms in our community, we should be able to piece the lost crop back together for a full harvest, though a bit delayed. At a time like this, our highly diversified farm makes so much sense, that our success is not dependent on any one crop, and that we have you, our CSA members cheering us on.
The great news is that the hardy greens and roots fared much better and we continue to have an abundant and beautiful crop of arugula, lettuce mix, spinach, scallions, turnips, and more for you to choose from this week. Asparagus is also poppin', so check out this compilation of recipes to inspire some fun meals!
