August has arrived and is bringing with it the beginning of the abundant season on the farm. We are just getting into pepper season in Central Oregon and we couldn't be more excited about it. This week we've got Poblanos for you in boxes, and soon we will have sweet peppers for you as well.
Poblanos are a fairly mild green chile with a lot of flavor. One of my favorite ways to enjoy them is in Chile Verde or Salsa Verde if you can find some tomatillos, or they are also great stuffed and roasted!
We've also got gorgeous red cabbage for you this week. We grow these plants close together in order to harvest small, manageable heads for you. We know a large cabbage in your fridge can linger (which they will store for an incredibly long time), and we hope to bring you cabbage in a more attainable size. I love using this cabbage for a fresh slaw, like this one from one of our lovely members, since it's so tender and mild. It's also one of my favorite taco toppings!
In addition to these new items, we finally have enough heirloom tomatoes to share with our members so we're mixing up the tomato scene a little bit this week so that you can try some new varieties. We've got pink, purple, and yellow this year and they're all fantastic. In general, the darker colored tomatoes tend to be brighter and more acidic, whereas the pinks and yellow are a bit more mellow, but still very flavorful. I like to use heirlooms as a feature tomato because of their meaty texture, perhaps in a Caprese Salad or a Tomato Galette!
To round it out, we've got cucumbers (because holy moly is it cucumber season on the farm), greens and roots for your cooking pleasure this week.
Happy eating,
Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
