I guess the farm is having a southern comfort food kind of week this week, and it feels fitting given the weather right now. We've got some fall specialties for you this week including Mustard Greens and Green Tomatoes.
Mustard greens aren't the most popular in this neck of the woods, but they're one of our favorite fall crops. They offer a wasabi type spice that adds big flavor without the lasting burn and we love these mustard greens sautéed or braised as a side, as well as in a bowl or soup. One of our favorite pairings with mustard greens is sausage because the bright flavor balances rich sausage so well. We hop you'll give this recipe for Spicy Pork and Mustard Green Soup a try this week. Cooking these mustard greens takes away a lot of the heat and leaves you with left with their great flavor. If mustard greens aren't your jam, we've got rainbow chard on the list this week as well for an alternative.
Everyone knows the classic Fried Green Tomatoes-- this is your chance to make them at home! I love that these are shallow fried so it feels more approachable in a home kitchen (or an air fryer would do wonders!). Cornmeal makes the perfect batter here that stays crunchy against a juicy tomato.
Another great option for green tomatoes is a green tomato salsa. Honestly, I grow tomatillos in my garden so I always head that direction for my green salsa, but green tomato salsa is on my list this year after a market customer told me she made one and it was the most creamy and balanced green salsa she's tried. Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!
In addition, we're having a last flush of cherry tomatoes that are coming your way this week, in addition to german butterball potatoes, carrots, parsley + sage to flavor all those roots, scallions (for that awesome soup recipe) and salad to round things out.
We hope you're enjoying some time in the kitchen with these earlier, cooler evenings.
Your farmers,
Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
