Week 10

Wow! Things are really growing fast right now. The long daylight hours, warm nights, and warm days makes for fast growth on crops and the weeds! Fortunately, we’re doing a pretty good job staying on top of the weeds and the crops are looking pretty good. My twins picked 400 pounds of tomatoes in their 2.5 hour work shift the other day.

Many people ask us if the dry weather hurts us much. As a produce farmer I’d much rather have dry weather than wet rainy weather. We have invested many thousands of dollars into irrigation pumps, filters, and miles of piping to keep all of the plants growing well in the driest of weather. Occasionally the rivers and streams that we irrigate with will get so low that we have to build make shift dams to create a pool big enough to pump water out of. And occasionally it will get so dry that we can only run the irrigation pumps for a couple of hours at a time before the pool of water goes empty. However, I’d rather take that struggle any day than rainy weather. The rain weather creates a perfect storm for diseases to spread in our crops. As an organic grower- there is little we can do to stop a disease once it starts.
