Lettuce & Hurricane

Posted on July 11th, 2024 by Shelli and Paul Meulemans

Lettuce explain why are without lettuce mix this week. I don’t know! We must have been too busy 4 weeks ago to get a planting out. Maybe it was too wet, maybe the transplants were behind… During the summer we plant and transplant both head lettuce and lettuce mix every other week in an attempt to keep them rolling for all of you! Anyhow, maybe we were busy weeding carrots, which will pay off this week because it’s finally time to harvest them.

This past week we had a pretty extreme rain event from the hurricane, it caused Lemon Creek to go above its banks about 18”, which caused our irrigation pumps to be quite under water… luckily our fields are pretty well drained this year, so the damage in the field appears to be quite minimal. It was quite interesting to feel like I might get washed off my feet walking where we usually drive in order to go manage the water in the crops. Regardless, all is well that ends well. It looks like we are still here to keep delivering as usual.
