Happy 4th of July! We are so so lucky to have an amazing farming partner (John Vars) and a strong staff of Managers who held down the fort while we spend last week visiting family on the East Coast. It was pretty exciting for the kids as they've never seen fireworks before. After the CZU Fire experience there will definitely be no sparklers for us. But it we were so fortunate the kids got to experience it in the hot and humid Northeast.
Speaking of humid... we haven't been able to shut off the windshield wipers on any of the farm vehicles in what feels like a couple weeks. The strawberries are not loving it, but there are lots of green fruit sets and flowers on the plants, so hopefully it'll dry out sometime soon so we can send some away for a fresh batch of Happy Girl Kitchen jam.
I think we are officially hitting our summer stride. There are more summer squash than anyone wants ;). Carrots are back and I don't foresee any gaps. While sadly the sugar snap peas are returning to soil as carbon, the green beans are getting close. We also have our first few cucumbers and more and more on the way soon. For you beet lovers all 3 types we grow are on. Get your oven ready and pull out that nice bottle of balsamic and some good chevre or feta for a tangy roasted beet salad!
My daughter Ellie suggests before you toss away last week's bouquet, you might consider letting the budding mud chefs of the family use them to make some tempting (and convincing) mud cupcakes and pies!
This week is a Markegard Beef Week. For those of you that are new we offer Markegard Family Grassfed Beef, chicken, and pork every other week in the EXTRAS section. The Markegards are our neighbors and friends and raise some stellar and trustworthy meat products that you can feel good about supporting.
We also offer Companion Bakeshop artisan sourdough bread each Thursday as well. Fresh baked for you Thursday morning. So delicious! Definitely the best bread in Santa Cruz
