Hello!
I spent a good part of the day preparing for the coming winter storm and protecting vulnerable crops against the extreme cold temps projected over the next few days. The menu this week is what I THINK we can offer, but no harvest work is scheduled until Tuesday afternoon. The menu for Saturday Delivery may be totally different! We are right on the cusp of some new eats.
I have barely broken even on Romaine Lettuce, mainly because it is one of the crops that needs minimal heat at about 44 degrees for the large leaves to survive the cold. For 2 years i
I have trialed different varieties that might be grown closer together, so we can get more lettuce out of a given heated space. I think we have identified two candidates that can do just that! Of course, 8 or 9 of the months we will continue to grow our beloved Green Forest Romaine, yet these new players have pretty good texture, good volume, and very good Romaine Flavor!
This week I am the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Tannin Italian Restaurant parking lot, 4:30-5:30 after that for our Allen Street and Greater Lansing Friends. Thursday afternoon is farm pickup, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. Our menu is somewhat smaller this week, and more coming soon!
