Farm Happenings for April 9, 2022

Posted on April 6th, 2022 by Mark Kastner
Yesterday I "potted up" a lot of Tomato and Pepper plants in the nursery for both plant sales and our own use...a sure sign of Spring. This morning at about 6:30, it's snowing. My master crop schedule calls for early Melon and Cucumber seed planting in two weeks; which of the three scenarios is correct? Of course it's all three!

A large part of my farming purpose is to advance the idea that organic practices and locally produced fresh not only tastes better, but is a far superior product in nutritional value. Further, I would like to have available for consumers that currently don't have access or the monetary ability to purchase great food, the potential  to enjoy what we do. I have approached this affordability issue because I deeply believe in what I do. I saw a report recently stating the average family (whatever that is) is spending $211.00 more per month than 2 years ago. This will not encourage spending on better food.

There are four main drivers to food costs and the main one is waste. The Japanese pioneered this research, and the focus on Muda, or waste. I encourage my CSA, I pioneer an online farmstand in order to sell excess production, and other ways to predict the weekly harvests and minimize the waste of excellent food.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and  the Allen Street Farmers Market after that 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00--12:00 noon
I hope to  see you soon!
