The Arctic cold air mass known as the Polar Vortex has now shifted over north-central Europe.
The backside of this pressure system leaves Michigan vulnerable to the southward drift of cold Canadian air, and I think we'll be below normal temperatures through the month of April. I normally transplant early Tomatoes into the unheated hoop houses in mid April, but not this year! We will delay a week or two and transplant them along with peppers and maybe Cucumbers.
New summer CSA sign ups for the warmer season and Fruit Shares will be open next week; Summer CSA begins May 2. Also note the last Winter/ Spring CSA will end Saturday, April 23. There are no CSA distributions the week of April 24. The Members will get a chance to clean out their refrigerators, and the Farmer, a week off, although we will honor online requests, and attend the Allen Street Farmers Market. In between I am installing new plastic on one of the big high tunnels as we already prepare to winterize for next year!
I endured a mini Doctor appointment last week. All is well; my very compassionate Doctor cautioned me that she thought a new surge in Covid 2a cases would emerge in 2-3 weeks. We are always conscious of food safety practices, and this is no different. If anyone has concerns or specific requests, please let me know and we cooperate with your immediate needs.
This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
