Farm Happenings for January 25, 2023

Posted on January 22nd, 2023 by Mark Kastner
Roughly two weeks from now our latitude  will reach 10 hours of daylight. At that point photosynthesis will slowly begin as our transplants "wake up" and begin to grow. Some early crops can tolerate cold soil, and most of those are either started in the nursery, or already transplanted in my two large high tunnels, like lettuce, kale, and spinach. These crops are to be harvested by May 15, when the Summer and Autumn harvests take their place!

I am still planting Asian Greens, Spinach, Baby Lettuce, and approximately 90 heads on Romaine/ week. The certified Organic Potting Soil I use comes in big :totes" that weigh between 800-1200 lbs each, and if the ground doesn't freeze soon we can't get resupplied, because the delivery tractor cannot maneuver on soft ground! I still have enough soil up to about February 15, when we plant the main Tomato and Pepper crops, and the early February weather report looks favorable.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at n12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
