Years ago a good friend and very wise man warned me that growing great chemical-free food is an addiction. He is right, and year after year I get the fever in mid January! In order to "scratch the itch" we'll start the week planting flats of Onions, Baby Leaf Lettuces, Spinach, and Asian Mild Salad Greens, and early Tomatoes.
As a small grower using mostly hand production, I always run short of Fresh Greens in February and March. This week we will increase Romaine Starts from 60/ week to 96, and the flats of Lettuce Salad Mix to 3 flats every week. Yesterday, Amber and Eva transplanted about 300 heads of specialty midi heads of Sandwich Lettuces! Not on this week's menu, I should have a limited amount of Boston Lettuce and beautiful red and green Sandwich Lettuce.
This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the indoor Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00-12:00 noon.
I hope to see you soon!
