Farm Happenings for September 6, 2023

Posted on September 3rd, 2023 by Mark Kastner
Because of the Holiday weekend, I extended the customization deadline from Monday over to 10:00 AM Tuesday for our CSA Members. The same deadline applies to online reservations and other orders for Wednesday delivery.

I will post a picture online; the first bed of 250 certified organic Strawberry transplants  are in the ground! Instead of planting in the Spring as a perennial and waiting a 1-2 years to harvest, I transplant them in the late summer as an annual and harvest the following Spring/ Summer, after overwintering in low tunnels about 4 feet high. Because we don't spray, the short turn around reduces exposure to pests and disease. It is a little more expensive, and the extra effort is well worth the end result! Taste and value guaranteed.

These Berries are one of the very few crops that we don't start ourselves from seed. Our supplier in Carbondale, Indiana, is a master at keeping our starts pure and disease free!

This week I am at the Family Fare Parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and scheduled home deliveries. Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Farmers Market on River Street, 9:00 AM-1:00PM. I hope to see you soon!
