Farm Happenings for June 3, 2021

Posted on May 30th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Happy first week of June!

The plants enjoyed the rain fall last week and will definitely be soaking up all of the sun in the upcoming week! This time of year, things grow unbelievably fast, including the weeds! Since we do not grow with herbicides, all of our weed control is human powered! In addition to our many types of hoes, we do end up doing a lot of hand weeding on our farm, especially because the land was managed conventionally with various types of sprays for many years prior to our stewardship. So, everything really is hand tended with a lot of love!

We really hope that everyone enjoyed the veggies from the first week! Even more variety is just beginning to roll in as we transition from greens season to heavy veggie season, as more types of roots and fruits mature. This is part of being in a local farm's CSA program and learning to enjoy eating with the seasons.

Most of our tomatoes are grown inside greenhouses where they are protected from colder temps and excess rain. Did you know that temps lower than 50 degrees impact tomato fruit quality? Even if the tomatoes are still flowers at that point? We got to 39 degrees two nights ago, which made me thankful for all of our tunnels.)
