I'm sure you've noticed that food prices have been rising, just like everything else. But have you noticed that our prices have remained steady this summer and fall? Our meat prices are the same that they were a year ago. Moose Family Farm is even running a sale on round steaks right now (buy 2 get 1 free). Our farmers are trying to hold the line on prices, but as their costs rise, our prices may have to increase next year. But for now they are holding steady.
Turkeys!
We have local pastured turkeys available for delivery before Thanksgiving. Moose Family Farm (the same farm that raises our chickens and some of our beef) has a limited quantity available for preorder. Add one to your order this week and pay the deposit, and we will bill you for the remaining cost the week of delivery. If you've never tasted a pasture-raised turkey, there is no comparison to the supermarket mass-produced variety.
Broccoli
If you received broccoli that was past its prime a couple of weeks ago, we have addressed the quality-control issue with the farmer. The warm weather made the broccoli ripen more quickly than expected. But the broccoli in last week's boxes was from a later planting, and it was beautiful again. So if you love broccoli, don't be afraid to try it again. And if you received a bad product, we are happy to issue a credit to your account. We want you to be happy with your CSA!
It's definitely soup weather now. How about Butternut Squash Soup? Cabbage Roll Soup? Zuppa Toscana? Derek from Glacial Till Farm says that he eats kale soup almost every day for lunch. Is that what gives him the energy to grow all these delicious veggies? You can find these recipes and lots more on our Pinterest boards.
This week's CSA news:
- Mushroom shares are blue oyster
- Baked goods include Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pepperoni Rolls, and Sandwich Buns
- Shiitakes are available as extras
- Carrots -- just a few from Glacial Till Farm, so grab them quick
There are only 4 more weeks in this season. Much of our veggie production is winding down, but we're still going strong with winter-hardy crops. Winter CSA sign-ups have started for some pickup locations.
