Week 2

Posted on May 15th, 2021 by Ford Waterstrat

We've loved receiving all your kind emails this past week. I share them with my team here and it make us all very happy. Thank you so much.

It's been an interesting and busy week on the farm. Wednesday and Thursday morning had mild frosts. As many of you know frost can kill "summer plants" like tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and the like. When its a light frost its possible to start spraying these frost sensitive crops with water before sun up to prevent the frost from developing. Fortunately our early morning efforts saved most of these plants. Imagine 3 football fields of these crops! Earlier in the season we had covered these fields with our 50x1000 foot blankets, but they were destroyed in the winds the week prior- But enough with that negative tone. These summer favorites are typically planted Mid May and take 2 months before the first harvest. From seeding in the greenhouse until the first harvest on a tomato plant is well over 3.5 months-but well worth the wait. We do plant some tomatoes in covered greenhouses to get an earlier start, but we chose not to start them any earlier in an effort to reduce our reliance and impact from using propane or natural gas to heat the greenhouses.

The weather is warming up and the plants that we started growing for you in February are coming along nicely. Broccoli, cabbage, radishes and onions are coming along nicely and we should start to have them in your shares in couple of weeks. The strawberries are continuing to produce well and we hope that you are enjoying them.

We hope to start sharing some videos and other communications to introduce you to everyone here at Sustainable Harvest Farm. My entire team and I want you to be 100% satisfied each week- so please keep those kind emails coming- and when there are issues- please reach out ASAP.

Sincere thanks,

Ford
