Week 11

Did you know that for the first time in 2 decades there is a very big potato shortage. Many of the countries biggest and best large potato farms have faced a challenging growing season. These farms are thousand upon thousands of acres of potatoes. We raise a measely 1 acre of potatoes. However- we've had a great potato crop this season. On Friday, my 3 kiddos and most of the farm team harvested nearly 10,000 pounds of potatoes. We were thrilled and thankful to have a good crop- and you can expect to see potatoes in your shares for most of the season.

When you raise over 40 different types of vegetables there will be years when some crops do great and some that don't do so well. Did you know that when tempatures are over 90 degrees- many tomato, peppers, green beans, and several other crops actually "abort" their fruit/flower because they know it will be tough for that plant to produce a crop at that point. Fortunately another set of flowers/fruit develops but the overall amount of crop the plant will produce decreases. Bell Peppers are also in short supply across the country because of the extreme heat we had in June.

Fortunately for you as a Farm Share member- you're our top priority and when things are in short supply- we take care of your first.

There are only 3 crops that we're really dissapointed about this season-

  1. Sweet Corn- As mentioned before I believe this is the first season we've not had sweet corn for our Farm Share members
  2. Watermelon/Cantaloupe-Another mainstay item in our summer shares- unfortunately we will have very limited amounts available this season
  3. Carrots- Each year we struggle with this crop and this year will be the same-

Other than those 3 crops- we hope that you're thrilled with your share each week. My team and I take great pride in growing, harvesting, and distributing our Certified Organic Crops to you each week.

Best wishes,

Ford
