We're 3 days out from Halloween, and the pumpkins are going fast! After the weekend, the patch is looking a bit sparse, but there's at least a few hundred orange, pink and warty specimens out there for your picking pleasure. If you haven't come by yet, it's time to grab your future jack-o-lantern!
On the rest of the farm, things are winding down for the winter. With normal fall temperatures and less than 12 hours of light per day, plant growth is slowing down. I'm putting in another 20 or so rows of cold weather crops for spring harvest in the next week, and we'll plant out the garlic, onions and leeks in November. And then we hunker down for the winter - catch up on sleep and all the books and videos that fell by the wayside during the summer months, go to conferences to talk shop with other farmers, drool over seed catalogs and make grand plans for the upcoming season.
