As we enjoy the Summer Harvest Bounty and transplant for the Autumn and Winter fare, I will have our intern's help, this being Jessie's last week at Hillcrest Farms. I will spend part of the week preparing to overwinter three crops for next Spring! All three crops will be grown in 4 feet high mini hoops called low tunnels. I will talk about our Organic Strawberries next week
Carrots will be available as early as late January, if we get a brief thaw so I can open up the plastic, and the cold will cause them to become very sweet. These plants develop more sugar as antifreeze! We also have a special variety of onions that are ready for transplanting next week. They will develop their roots over time and as the daylight hours increase in April, the bulbs will form, and Fresh Onions will be ready late May! SometimesI just love this job!
This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and scheduled home deliveries. Saturday we are in Grand Ledge at the Farmers Market on River Street, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. I hope to see you soon!
